Iowa Dem running for Senate disses Republican as ‘a farmer from Iowa’

A Democrat running for Senate in Iowa must not think much of Iowa.

U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, a Dem who’s represented Iowa’s First District in Congress since 2007, is on the defensive thanks to a video making the rounds that shows him disparaging his state, its senior senator and its main industry while sucking up to some well-heeled potential donors in Texas.

Braley, a lawyer talking to lawyers at a Jan. 23 fundraiser in Corpus Christi, contrasted his personal-injury law background with Sen. Charles Grassley, a Republican farmer who’s represented Iowa in the Senate for 34 years.

“If you help me win this race, you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice … on the Senate Judiciary Committee,” Braley said in the video. “Or you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.”

Naturally, according to Braley, what overwhelmingly agricultural Iowa needs looking out for its interests in Washington is another lawyer, as opposed to some no-account farmer from Iowa who doesn’t even know how to seed a class-action suit or spread the fertilizer for a healthy-personal injury claim.

Braley — a liberal’s liberal, according to Project Vote Smart — is considered likely to win the Democratic nomination to try to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin.

He apologized to Grassley when word of the video became public, but Republicans running for their own party’s nomination had a field day with the “farmer” line.

“Bruce Braley’s ignorant remarks are yet another reminder that he only aims to serve one group: trial lawyers nationwide, not Iowans,” businessman Mark Jacobs said, according to Breitbart. “To insinuate that someone like Chuck Grassley, who has served this state so honorably, is not fit to be a committee chair because he is a just ‘a farmer from Iowa’ is offensive.”

Besides apparently not liking farmers from Iowa, Braley might want to be careful about letting it slip that he hates John Wayne movies, the nickname “the Hawkeye State” and presidential caucuses.
