Pub owner ignites firestorm over sign calling gun owners losers

The owner of a South Carolina pub has drawn national attention – and not in a good way – over a sign he placed in the window aimed at gun owners.

The Backstreets Pub & Deli in Clemson posted the sign which said:

“NO CONCEALED WEAPONS ALLOWED. If you are such a loser that you feel a need to carry a gun with you when you go out, I do not want your business. Douchebag.”

Backlash began after Twitchy posted several tweets of the sign Tuesday:

The pub’s owner, identified as Pete, is backpedaling saying the sign was only temporary and that he regrets using the rude language.

“It just came out wrong because I was frustrated,” Pete told the Washington Times. He described himself as a “conservative Democrat” and concealed carry permit holder since 2001.

“There are cops everywhere. Cameras everywhere,” he told The Times. “Guns have no place here in a college town.”

In the mean-time, the pub’s phone is off the hook and its Facebook page was taken down due to being overwhelmed by Second Amendment supporters.

The pub has a one-star rating on Yelp, with pages of comments from Second Amendment supporters weighing in, not so much on his decision to keep guns out, but because of the language he used to do it.

“A simple sign stating that concealed weapons are not allowed (which legally, you ignorant snob, you’re not allowed to concealed carry while consuming alcohol) on the premises, would have sufficed,” Cassandra L. said. “But instead you choose to elaborate on your ignorance by calling Law Abiding Citizens names.”

“Glad you shared your views on concealed carry in your store, it was the fashion you chose to do it however that shows an utter lack of respect for not only anyone that IS your current customer base but also to those who may at some point wish to become a part of the customer base,” Eric K. said. “See… putting up a simple sign that says no firearms allowed, or a pistol with the line draw through is more than enough and won’t cause immediate backlash from the community.”

Pete says he plans to keep the pub open.
