College professor says climate change deniers should be jailed for criminal negligence

Global warmingA Rochester Institute of Technology professor is accusing those who don’t believe in global warming of being criminally negligent, saying they should be imprisoned.

Assistant professor of philosophy, Lawrence Torcello, compared climate change deniers to scientists who were jailed for six years after the L’Aquila, Italy, earthquake of 2009, in an essay published on the academic website The Conversation.

The scientists, he said, were not convicted of failing to predict the earthquake, but because proper warning of risks in the area were not communicated.

Torcello explained his rationale on how climate deniers are acting criminally:

The importance of clearly communicating science to the public should not be underestimated. Accurately understanding our natural environment and sharing that information can be a matter of life or death. When it comes to global warming, much of the public remains in denial about a set of facts that the majority of scientists clearly agree on. With such high stakes, an organised campaign funding misinformation ought to be considered criminally negligent.

When it comes to global warming, Torcello said, “an organised campaign funding misinformation ought to be considered criminally negligent.”

“It is time for modern societies to interpret and update their legal systems accordingly,” he concludes.

Maybe it’s time for RIT to take a look at its professors.
