A Democrat state lawmaker in Alabama said white Republicans would make their daughters have abortions if they “got pregnant by black men.”
State Rep. Alvin Holmes, a Democrat from Montgomery, Ala., was debating with a Republican colleague Tuesday over a bill that would restrict abortions when he brought race into the discussion, the Huntsville Times reported.
“Ninety-nine percent of all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion,” Holmes charged. “On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion.”
“She’s got two other white children and then she’s going to have a little black baby going to be running around there, in the living room, in the den, with the rest of them,” he continued.
Holmes, who once called U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an “Uncle Tom,” looked past the reality that mixed-race babies are more common today than ever.
According to the Washington Post, the number of mixed-race babies have “soared over the past decade … [with] the number of children born to black and white couples and to Asian and white couples almost doubled.”
To further establish his bigotry, Holmes asked the Republican lawmaker if she would allow her daughter to give birth to the child of a black man.
When she answered yes, he replied with a laugh, “Well I need to commend you, then. It wouldn’t be one out of 100,000 that would do that.”
