Inflammatory video brands Clinton ‘Butcher of Benghazi’

An inflammatory new video about the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, seeks to place blame squarely on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens, a staff member and two security guards.

hillarybutcher0304Unfortunately for Americans who are truly outraged by the Benghazi attack and the cascade of Clinton/Obama lies that followed it, “Breach of Duty: Hillary Clinton and Catastrophic Failure in Benghazi,” is just too over-the-top. It might be more likely to come across as a gift to Clinton than the attack its makers seem to hope.

Released by Special Operations OPSEC, a group formed to fight the Obama administration’s practice of making decisions about national security and the safety of American diplomatic and special operations forces based on domestic politics, “Breach of Duty” at first does a fair job of laying out the facts of the Benghazi attack.

It shows again that security for Americans posted there was abysmal, despite previous attacks. It argues again that there were more options available during the attack than the administration will admit. And it documents again – and worst of all — the wall of lies President Obama, Clinton and the rest of the administration built up to avoid admitting to the country in the heat of a presidential campaign that Islamist terrorists were attacking Americans virtually at will.

And it highlights again Clinton’s angry outburst before a Senate committee investigating the attacks, when she famously asked, “At this point, what difference does it make?”

The problem with the video – and the danger it poses for those who care about what happened in Benghazi – isn’t the case it makes. The facts are mostly well known to anyone who’s followed the story Sept. 11, 2012.

hillarytestimony0304The problem is its conclusion, and the hyper-accusatorial “Butcher of Benghazi” label it tries to place on Clinton. B-movie graphics that make the Benghazi attack look like the climax of “Carrie,” with Hillary Clinton as some demented, murderous Sissy Spacek don’t help.

Look, I’m as angry about Benghazi and the aftermath as anybody – that “remember the Benghazi 4” ribbon on my picture at the bottom of this column has been there since I did a story about the “Remember the Benghazi 4” Twibbon campaign when it started in August.

But flamethrowing polemics – however heartfelt – aren’t always smart in American politics.

Clinton’s defenders are legion and they are far from stupid. Their plan since the scandal started has been to paint her Benghazi critics as fevered, hysterical paranoids finding bloodstained conspiracies where none exist. Fevered, hysterical videos like “Breach of Duty” play right into their hands.

To answer Clinton’s question to the Senate committee, what happened to those Americans murdered in Benghazi does matter. Even at this point, it matters a great deal.

And over-the-top videos, with obviously doctored photos of a former secretary of state’s hands dripping with blood, might just end up hurting the cause in the end.

Check out the video. See if you agree.
