Republicans are striking and Democrats are in full-fledged damage control after Florida congressional candidate Alex Sink made an ill-conceived remark Tuesday on immigration.
Sink’s campaign made national news after her response to a question during a debate.
The Sarasota County Republican Party sent out an email blast containing a clip of Sink’s remarks titled, “VIDEO: Racist Liberal Alex Sink,” the Times reported.
The GOP immediately pounced. Republican Party of Florida Chairman Lenny Curry made this statement:
“Alex Sink’s comments are as shocking as they are narrow-minded,” he said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “Floridians are people who want to work hard to make their dreams come true, and in our state no dream is out of reach. For Alex Sink to make such an implication about those who immigrate to Florida is insulting.”
Campaign spokesperson for her Republican opponent, David Jolly also responded:
“Alex Sink’s comments during the debate this week were truly disturbing and offensive. She should apologize immediately,” spokeswoman Sarah Bascom told The Hill in an email. “These comments are inappropriate and show just how out of touch Alex Sink truly is with the people of Pinellas County.”
With less than two weeks remaining before the special election, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee didn’t waste time in damage control. It published a video ad under the theme, “Who’s behind these ads smearing Alex Sink?”
The answer to that would likely be Alex Sink herself — they were her thoughts and her words that formed the bases for the ads.
