A 13-year-old Girl Scout in San Francisco, with a lot of help from mom, decided a marijuana shop would be a great location to peddle cookies.
While some hailed the decision as “ingenious” and “savvy,” others saw it as another black eye for an organization that appears to be taking a troubling radical turn.
According to the local NBC affiliate, the girl’s mother, Carol Lei, contacted The Green Cross medical marijuana clinic beforehand, and the pot shop was only too happy to welcome the young entrepreneur.
The cookies proved to be a popular cure for the munchies, with well over 100 boxes sold.
“It’s no secret that cannabis is an appetite stimulant — so it’s not shocking that a lot of our patients came and purchased cannabis, and then saw the cookies and purchased them,” a spokesperson for The Green Cross told KNTV.
This is not the first time Lei has allowed her two middle-school-aged daughters to sell cookies in front of a medical marijuana clinic, according to Mashable.
“You put it in terms that they may understand. I’m not condoning it, I’m not saying go out in the streets and take marijuana,” Lei said. “It also adds a little bit of cool factor. I can be a cool parent for a little bit.”
In an interview with East Bay Express, Lei described the cookie sale as a teachable moment for her daughters.
“They learn that they’re not drugged out,” she explained. “Many have serious needs, and are just a little different.”
Hopefully, the learning experience doesn’t result in the young teen getting a contact high from what the East Bay Express article described as “the aroma of weed wafting out the door.”
A Girl Scouts official did not have a problem with the location, Mashable reported.
“We’re not telling people where they can and can’t go if it’s a legitimate business,” said Dana Allen, director of marketing and communications for Girl Scouts of Northern California.
Ironically, the Girl Scout organization in Colorado, where even recreational marijuana is legal, does draw a line on pot shops, according to this tweet:
If you are wondering, we don’t allow our Girl Scouts to sell cookies in front of marijuana shops or liquor stores/bars.
