Outspoken rocker Ted Nugent does not mince his words when criticizing the left, but may have pushed the envelope a little too far in recent remarks about President Barack Obama.

And once Nugent joined GOP gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott on the stump in Texas this week, the media has been only too happy to remind us of those words — Abbott is running against Democrat Wendy Davis, known as “Abortion Barbie” in many conservative circles.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer has been focused on Nugent’s comment all week — see below for Nugent’s reaction — and he continued that theme in an interview Thursday with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a likely 2016 GOP presidential candidate.

Nugent, who performed at Perry’s 2007 inauguration, said in an interview last month with Guns.com:

“I have obviously failed to galvanize and prod if not shame enough Americans to be ever vigilant not to let a Chicago communist-raised, communist-educated, communist-nurtured subhuman mongrel like the ACORN community organizer gangster Barack Hussein Obama to weasel his way into the top office of authority in the United States of America.”

“That’s pretty tough words,” the likely GOP presidential candidate replied when Blitzer asked him to comment. “We agree that that is not appropriate language to use for the president of the United States.”

Blitzer continued to press the issue, making the connection to the Abbott campaign. While Perry would say he’s “got a problem calling the president a mongrel,” he wasn’t about to play along.

“I’m not going to get into this side of whether it’s appropriate or not,” the Texas governor said. “There are people who say things all the time. The idea that Ted Nugent has said something that’s outrageous shouldn’t surprise anybody.”

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-K.Y., another potential 2016 presidential candidate, was quick to condemn Nugent on Twitter:

As for Nugent, he too turned to Twitter to express his thoughts on Wolf Blitzer — in his own unique way:
