John Bolton, the former U.S. ambassador to the U.N., gave a blistering assessment of President Obama‘s handling of foreign policy Tuesday, saying America will pay the price for having “a weak, feckless, inattentive president.”
Fox News host Greta Van Susteren asked Bolton to comment on what is happening in Ukraine, where bloody riots have the country descending into chaos. After explaining Russia’s role in events, he then spoke about America’s influence, or lack thereof, in the world.
“This is not just Ukraine,” Bolton said. “We’ve got riots and demonstrations in Caracas, Venezuela. Friends of the United States, in effect, friends of liberty, but friends of ours are out there trying to prevent their government from succumbing to autocracy and the U.S. government is effectively silent and inactive.”
Van Susteran turned the focus on Russian President Vladimir Putin, asking Bolton if this could be “a turning point in history.”
“What we’ve got in Putin is a man with a strategic vision and an autocratic mentality,” Bolton answered. “In Obama we’ve got a weak, feckless, inattentive president who not only doesn’t know what America’s interests are, I don’t think particularly cares about American national security.”
He added that Obama is devoted to “transforming America domestically,” and we will pay the price for this.
“We can see this all over the world,” he said. “American influence is slipping, slipping away in Ukraine, Venezuela, the Middle East and we will pay the price for this for a long time unless people speak up.”
