This is the five-year anniversary of the rant that sparked the the tea party movement, which in turn led to the “shellacking” of the 2010 election, bringing the U.S. House of Representatives into Republican control.
On Feb. 19, 2009, CNBC editor and ranter extraordinaire Rick Santelli was on air and at the Chicago Board of Trade when informed of the possibility of a federal mortgage bailout. This came on the heel of Obama’s nearly $1 trillion stimulus bill and the Troubled Asset Relief Program, known as TARP, enacted during the closing days of the Bush administration.
That was the final straw for Santelli, and it prompted the rant heard around the world.
