Watch: Peaceful protests met with violence in Venezuela

Three people died in a span of four days as protests intensified in the streets of Caracas between supporters and opponents of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

U. S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said last week that the world must “wake up to what’s happening in Venezuela as the government’s unprecedented wave of repression is beating, jailing and even killing innocent Venezuelans, particularly its young people.”

Opponents are angry overhigh inflation, violent crime and a shortage of goods, and Maduro is accusing them of plotting a coup, according to BBC News.

Maduro has said the media is misrepresenting the government’s handling of the opposition, but opponents says their protests are peaceful and unarmed.

Watch the report via the BBC:

The Venezuelan government blocked Twitter users from posting images of the demonstrations, Twitter spokesman Nu Wexler confirmed in an email to Bloomberg News Thursday.

But that hasn’t stopped some from disseminating information about what is happening there, like this video posted on YouTube:

“The people of Venezuela have suffered long enough and, as they continue taking to the streets in peaceful protest, I stand with them and against the Venezuelan government’s brutal and lethal tactics,” Rubio said. “Our condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones during this unsettling time.”
