Olympic Games at Sochi called ‘most corrupt of all time’

As much as $18 billion may have been embezzled from the Sochi Olympics, according to a newly released report by anti-corruption campaigner Alexey Navalny.

That would represent nearly a third of the total cost to put on the Winter Games.

“A lot of this money seems to have been stored offshore, so we don’t actually know who the end participant is,” BuzzFeed Foreign Editor Miriam Elder told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” Saturday. “Allegations made in the report are that they are friends of [Russian President] Vladimir Putin.”

In listing some of the outrageous expenditures, Tapper said the report found that $8 billion was spent on a new road; $500 million to $665 million went to build a stadium; $238 million was spent on a theme park; and a single medical helicopter cost $15 million.

The “medical” helicopter was assigned to a local mayor and was said to be equipped with leather seats, air conditioning and an iPhone holder, while the theme park is not scheduled to be built until 2020.

“This is the most expensive and the most corrupt games of all time,” said the former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov, according to Tapper.

“This is just how business is done in Russia,” Elder said.
