A South Florida man accidentally shot himself in the leg — while driving home from a firearms safety course.

Boynton Beach police found Eric Morkert, the hapless victim, sitting in the bed of his pickup truck Friday, nursing his right leg from a 9-mm bullet wound, according to WPBF.

WPBF reported:

Morkert told police he’d just left a firearms safety class and had pulled over to inspect his new Glock 17. Morkert said he removed the magazine and was manipulating the slide when the gun discharged.

The first rule taught in any National Rifle Association firearms safety course is to “assume every firearm is loaded.” Morkert must have been getting coffee and donuts when that one came up.

Paramedics took him to Delray Community Hospital, where he was treated and released. The police took possession of his new Glock.
