Governor Rick Scott announced an $80 million commitment for cancer research in the “It’s Your Money Tax Cut Budget Tuesday.”
The budget includes $60 million for existing Florida Cancer Centers to assist in achieving National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation, and another $20 million commitment for peer-reviewed research grants. The announcement was made at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, which is Florida’s only nationally recognized NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“I am happy to announce today that our ‘It’s Your Money Tax Cut Budget,’ furthers our state’s commitment to becoming a national leader in cancer research. This investment will help cancer centers across the state gain national recognition and conduct groundbreaking research,” Scott said. “It is essential that we continue to support cancer research in Florida so we can provide for the health needs of families.”
Dr. Alan F. List, President and CEO of Moffitt Cancer Center and others in the field praised the move: “Florida is moving rapidly to a place of leadership nationally and globally in the area of cancer research and treatment. I support Governor Scott’s proposed additional funding for NCI-designated Cancer Centers in our state and celebrate the fact that this investment will lead to better health and positive outcomes for families.”
