Credit must be given to CNN for booking Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., an open socialist, and tea party favorite U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., to discuss economic matters as a lead up to President Obama‘s State of the Union speech Tuesday night.
Fireworks were sure to be in the works and the two ideologically-opposed lawmakers did not disappoint, as their segment on Wolf Blitzer’s “The Situation Room” quickly got out of hand Monday.
Blitzer kicked the segment off by asking about income inequality, which will be a key part of Obama’s address to the nation, but the discussion would end up all over the board.
But Social Security was the topic that really set things off, when Sanders suggested that Bachmann and her Republic colleagues want to cut benefits.
“That’s absolutely a lie,” Bachmann charged. “This old canard is trotted out all the time.”
“Wait a second, wait a second,” Sanders responds as she is speaking.
“Well, it’s a lie,” Bachmann continued. “I mean, let’s face it Senator Sanders.”
Sander continually asked Bachmann if she supports “a chained CPI,” which is a reference to how some Social Security benefits are calculated – a question she ignored, even as he raised his voice louder and louder.
“Calm down!” she would eventually tell him.
And the segment still had another five minutes to go. The two would go at one another several more times, with Blitzer seemingly content to let the lawmakers have at it.
