Senate GOP to unveil Obamacare alternative Monday

KristolIt has been forty six months since the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, was signed into law by President Barack Obama, which appears to be how long the Republican Party needed to put together a conservative option.

“Senior Republican senators” are expected to “outline their plan” this week, according to Bill Kristol, editor of “The Weekly Standard.” Not the entire plan, mind you, just a basic outline.

The Weekly Standard reported:

Senators Richard Burr of North Carolina, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, and Orrin Hatch of Utah will lay out the plan tomorrow, Kristol revealed. Over the next few months, Republicans in the House and Senate will work on some “tweaks” to the plan in hopes of having legislation ready if Republicans win the Senate in November.

“Then it’s up to the president if he wants to abandon Obamacare and sign on to a sensible health-care reform,” Kristol said.

Having had the advantage of seeing firsthand the shortcomings of Obama’s signature health care law, the GOP’s plan is likely to be an improvement.

But even if they do regain control of the Senate, Obama has been clear that he will stand behind the current law, saying in December, “We’re not repealing it as long as I’m president.”

Which means a veto would surely await any new legislation that does reach his desk.
