Conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza is moving ahead with the scheduled July 4 release of his new documentary “America,” although he is facing charges for campaign finance violations.
Charges, his attorney maintains, are “politically motivated” and perhaps, “retribution” for his hard-hitting documentary “Obama’s America.”
“When American citizens begin to suspect that people are being arrested for alleged minor violations because of their vocal dissent against their elected representatives or rulers, it breeds disrespect and contempt for the law and suspicion of those officials,” co-producer Gerald Molen told The Hollywood Reporter. “If this unfortunate action against Dinesh is intended to deter the release of his upcoming film, America, that effort will fail.”
“America” is the follow-up documentary to D’Souza’s hit “2016: Obama’s America,” which became the “second most popular political documentary in history,” according to the Reporter.
“In this film ‘America,’ I want to take this progressive, leftist critique head on…and debunk it,” D’Souza said in the newly released trailer.
What started in the 1960’s, but has now become mainstream Democratic progressive politics, he said, is the “basic idea that America is a society that is based on theft…America is a society based on stealing and plunder.”
D’Souza said he wishes to “effectively answer and debunk” what is being taught as the “defining feature” of American history: That the country was stolen from the Indians by force, that we stole the labor of the African-Americans to build the country, that we stole half of Mexico in the war, and that America’s foreign policy today is based on “plundering” the oil of the Middle East.
