U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is “working behind the scenes to scuttle bipartisan actions” to put new sanctions on Iran if it reneges on a deal to limit its nuclear program, according to an insider on the Hill.
Wasserman Schultz is carrying water for the White House in Washington, trying to stall a bill it doesn’t like while at the same time telling her heavily Jewish constituency in South Florida that “she is doing all she can to stop Iran,” the source told the Washington Free Beacon.
“But in reality it appears she is busy behind the scenes working to scuttle bipartisan action to put increased sanctions pressure on Iran,” the source said.
According to Reuters, the “Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act” sponsored by Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and co-sponsored by Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, is gathering momentum in the Senate. It’s supported by Democratic heavyweights like Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, but opposed by some Senate Democrats.
In the House, a companion bill stalled at the end of December when House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., backed out because of lobbying by Wasserman Schultz, the Free Beacon reported.
Another Florida lib, Rep. Alan Grayson, is opposed to the sanctions bill, too, according to the Free Beacon.
The bill would require more sanctions on Iranian oil sales and “apply new penalties on other industries if Iran either violates the interim agreement or fails to reach a final comprehensive deal,” Reuters reported.
It’s also opposed by President Obama, who has threatened to veto the measure, and the Iranians. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif has said his country would back out of the interim agreement if the bill passes.
The Iranians, naturally, claim their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. Of course, they also say “having a nuclear bomb is necessary to put down Israel,” according to another Free Beacon report.
So Wasserman Schultz is lining up with the White House against some top leaders of her party and her own Jewish constituents, according to the Free Beacon. And that’s making some Jewish leaders unhappy. Jewish leaders have scheduled a meeting with Wasserman Schultz to discuss the problem, the Free Beacon reported.
“Every minute she is publicly silent, or working against bipartisan efforts to pressure Iran, is a minute she is siding with the mullahs over the American people who overwhelmingly want mounting pressure,” the Free Beacon source said.
