NY town’s councilman sworn in wearing a pasta strainer on his head

I see a lot of strange news in this business, but this one admittedly took me by surprise.

Christopher Schaeffer, newly elected Pomfret, N.Y. Town Council member was sworn in wearing a pasta strainer on his head last week, according to local New York paper the Observer.

Schaeffer is a Pastafarian minister and calls himself a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Are you starting to get the connection?

I could expand but a picture is worth a thousand words.

The photo was taken by the Observer’s Greg Fox, but tweeted by Caitlin Mac Neal (@caitlinmacneal).

When asked about the bizarre headwear, Schaeffer told the reporter, “It’s just a statement about religious freedom. It’s a religion without any dogma.”

From the Observer:

“Most of us do not believe a religion – Christianity, Islam, Pastafarianism – requires literal belief in order to provide spiritual enlightenment,” the church’s website states. “That is, we can be part of a community without becoming indoctrinated. There are many levels of belief.”

While colanders may or may not reappear in the future on the Pomfret Town Board, Schaeffer said he is committed to working for the residents of the town of Pomfret.

Lots of luck to that town.
