Methodist university touts Islamic prayer room, Sharia-compliant washrooms next?

Texas Wesleyan UniversityA recent article promoting an “interfaith” prayer room at Texas Wesleyan University is creating a buzz on conservative blogs.

The Methodist-affiliated university established the prayer room in 2012, at the request of Mohammed Khalid M. Alshafei, president of the Saudi Students Club, saying it was important to Saudi culture.

“The reasons for this [prayer room] are twofold,” the Rev. Dr. Robert K. Flowers, Wesleyan’s chaplain, said in The Rambler article. “One, to show hospitality to our foreign students and, two, our campus needs to be open and tolerant of other faith traditions whether it is Islam, Hindu, Jewish, or otherwise.”

Saying the room is for all religions is a farce, Freedom Outpost said, adding:

Under the guise of “interfaith” outreach, the University has created an Islamic specific prayer room facing the Ka’ba Shrine in Mecca. There is nothing interfaith about this prayer room. The word “interfaith” is a lie, and would allow anyone to think that the room would be open to all students, including Christians.

So if the room was established in 2012, why the backlash to an article promoting it a year later?

Islamic ritual requires students must wash their hands and feet before praying. According to The Rambler:

Currently, students who use the prayer room wash their hands and feet in the bathrooms of the Morton Fitness Center but the question of whether or not a different area should be used has come up in recent conversations.

Freedom Outpost said the room proves that Sharia is creeping into America’s Christian-based culture. Will a separate Sharia-compliant washroom be next for Texas Wesleyan?
