Name change is in order: Illegal Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Although all the members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns share a desire to remove illegal guns from the streets of their cities, they have a somewhat more cavalier attitude when it comes to other types of illegal activity.

When the two mayors and co-founders of the group, New York’s Michael Bloomberg and Boston’s Thomas Menino, step down from their positions in January, focus will likely fall on less well-known member-mayors, and that could be a problem, according to the New York Post.

Monticello, N.Y. Mayor Gordon Jenkins was recorded last week on a police security camera spewing a string of obscenities at his own officers and destroying a departmental wall clock while handcuffed to the wall after he was arrested for driving under the influence.

Several years ago Jenkins pleaded guilty for selling counterfeit Nike shoes out of his store, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

Jenkins isn’t alone. Spring Valley, N.Y. Mayor Noramie Jasmin was arrested in April along with her deputy mayor for accepting bribes from an FBI informant.

The Post reported:

Down in Gainesville, Fla., Mayor Craig Lowe was charged with a DUI after being found asleep at the scene of a car accident. Meanwhile, other MAIG members from Hartford to Detroit have found themselves facing prosecutors over charges that include felony corruption, assault and attempted sex crimes with a child.

Although Mayors Against Illegal Guns is clearly a pro-gun control group, Marcus Hook, Pa., Mayor James Schiliro was arrested in March for reckless endangerment after he allegedly fired a handgun inside his residence.

Maybe it’s time for the group to either change its name or be more selective in its membership.
