Battle over 36 pages of Islam in Fla. textbook about to explode; Dems back CAIR

Republicans and Democrats are gearing up for a big fight Monday afternoon in Volusia County over the controversial 10th grade World History book that has been accepted as part of the Common Core State Standards.

The Nov. 5 Volusia School Board meeting was cancelled due to “security concerns” as protesters planned to express their concerns over the textbook that allegedly contains a chapter on Islam, but much less on other religions.

The Volusia County Republican Party is now calling for protesters to attend Monday’s board meeting:

Citizens of Volusia County have expressed concern that the history presented in this textbook is not truthful and is biased in favor of Islam at the expense of Christianity and Judaism.

Our concern is about History being taught accurately in our Volusia County Public Schools. This textbook was brought into our system for the 2013-14 school years by the Volusia County School Board. It is being used in tandem with the Common Core State Standards approved in 2008.

We want the Volusia School Board to put this textbook issue on their Agenda for a future meeting for open, public discussion and action to correct the problem this textbook has. Protest without action does us no good. We want our School Board to take some action to address citizens concerns.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is pleased that the Volusia County Democratic Party is planning to counter protest and “stand up to the book burners.”

CAIR sent an email out linking to the Volusia County Democrats Facebook event containing information about Monday’s protest:

A cynical attack is being launched upon our Volusia County School Board by a group of bigoted, Tea Party ideologues bent on censoring the District’s state-approved 10th Grade History text and rewriting it to their own liking. This is clearly the first salvo in an insidious attempt to unseat the current moderate Board and replace it with individuals more easily controlled by far-right extremists. Stand Up To the Book Burners!

Support our children’s right to learn!

Attend the School Board meeting!

Try to arrive no later than 2:30, seats are limited and the “patriots” will try to pack the house! Anti-bigotry, anti-censorship, anti-extremist signs more than welcome!
