White guy wins election by leading voters to think he’s black

The voters in one Houston race just proved that they don’t adhere to the dreams of the later civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Their votes indicated they placed “color of skin” over “content of character.”

Dave Wilson, a conservative white Republican, beat a deeply entrenched, 24-year incumbent for a seat in the Houston Community College System by implying he was a black guy while running in a predominately black, Democratic district, according to KHOU Houston.

Wilson didn’t tell any actual lies. He simply sent out mailers that included photos of black models and actors and let the voters form their own opinions.

KHOU reported:

And it apparently worked. In one of the biggest political upsets in Houston politics this election season, Wilson — an anti-gay activist and former fringe candidate for mayor — emerged as the surprise winner over 24-year incumbent Bruce Austin. His razor thin margin of victory, only 26 votes, was almost certainly influenced by his racially tinged campaign.

“I don’t think it’s good,” the defeated Austin said. “I don’t think it’s good for both democracy and the whole concept of fair play. But that was not his intent, apparently.”

Nor is it good to cast a vote — for either a white or a black candidate — purely on the basis of race. We’re supposed to be beyond all that.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character,” King said in his famous “I had a dream” speech 50 years ago.
