’60 Minutes’ misled, apologizes for inaccurate Benghazi story

60 minutesA very humbled Lara Logan apologized to “60 Minutes” viewers Friday for the inaccurate reporting in its widely publicized interview with a Benghazi source last month.

“The most important thing to every person at ’60 Minutes’ is the truth, and today the truth is that we made a mistake,” Logan said on “CBS This Morning.” “That’s disappointing for any journalist. It’s very disappointing for me.”

lara loganAfter the interview, the show was questioned about the accuracy of statements made by its source, a British man who managed the Libyan guards for the U.S. Special Mission in Benghazi who used the pseudonym “Morgan Jones” during the interview, but has since been identified as Dylan Davies according to an “incident report” released by Davies employer, the Blue Mountain security group.

Davies had described events on the ground during the Sept. 11 terrorist attack and claimed to have seen the body of Ambassador Chris Stevens at the local hospital. He said he told the Federal Bureau of Investigations the same story he was sharing with Logan on the program.

“But what we now know is that he told the FBI a different story to what he told us,” Logan said. “That was the moment for us when we realized that we no longer had confidence in our source and that we were wrong to put him on air, and we apologize to our viewers.”

Logan was asked how Davies was vetted by the show, a show that doesn’t normally make such mistakes.

“We verified and confirmed that he was who he said he was, that he was working for the State Department at the time, that he was in Benghazi at the Special Mission compound the night of the attack,” she explained.

“He gave us access to communications he had with U.S. government officials. We used U.S. government reports and congressional testimony to verify many of the details of his story. And his story checked out,” Logan said.

“We were misled and wrong and that’s the important thing. We have to set the record straight and take responsibility.”

Logan said there would be more about this story on the upcoming Sunday broadcast of “60 Minutes.” However, neither she nor the show has heard from Davies since the FBI report was discovered.
