Conservatives outraged at designation of pedophilia as “sexual orientation”

A national outcry from social conservatives led to the American Psychiatric Association revising its finding that pedophilia is a “sexual orientation.”

In May, the association released with little fanfare the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders — the first new edition in 10 years, according to LifeSiteNews.

The organization classified pedophilia as a sexual “orientation,” a designation left largely unnoticed until a blogger at the University of Southern California published a post criticizing the change.

The blogger argued that the American Psychiatric Association gave pedophilia legitimacy by referring to it as an “orientation,” like heterosexuality or homosexuality.

The post led to a maelstrom of protest, including a Facebook page called, “Your orientation is my nightmare,” which included this powerful message:

I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
I hear the door to my room open with almost no noise
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
Once I realize that its not my mom coming to kiss me good night
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
While you gently slide my sheet off of me
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
While your orientation becomes my nightmare
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
Because I dont want to “get in trouble”
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
because I dont want him to grow up in a broken family like me
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
and pray that tonight I dont remind you of my mother
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
I lay very still and pretend that I am asleep
and pray that this is just a nightmare

An unnamed spokesman with the American Psychiatric Association responded to LifeSiteNews.com with this statement:

“In using [the term] sexual orientation, APA did not intend for it to be construed in the legal sense – as in a protected status under title IV and other legislation, but we learned that some may construe it that way. Therefore, we changed the word to ‘interest’ so that it would be clear that APA is speaking in medical terms, and is not commenting on legal status.”

According to LifeSiteNews:

The corrected text differentiates between mere impulses and actual actions. It notes that if people “are not functionally limited by paraphilic impulses,” and “they have never acted on their impulses,” then they have “sexual interest but not pedophiliac disorder.”

Liberty Counsel founder and Chairman Mat Staver criticized the distinction, saying the association’s publication could “provide pederasts with all the arguments they need to remove age of consent laws, and children will suffer.”

“If reclassifying pedophilia was merely an ‘error,’ it would have been caught” during the decade-long process of developing the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Staver added.
