D.C. police providing illegal firearms for gun-grabbers’ PR stunt

Washintgton, D.C., police have no problem breaking the law when it comes to liberal causes.

The same agency that denied a permit to the group 2 Million Bikers to D.C. to commemorate the 9/11 attacks while granting one to a Muslim fringe group for a demonstration on Sept. 11 is supplying illegal guns for an anti-gun event Sunday, according to the Washington Times.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., uses weapons supplied by the D.C. police as props during a news conference in January.

Times columnist Emily Miller, an outspoken champion of the Second Amendment, reports that the District police under Chief Cathy Lanier is violating D.C.’s strict gun control ordinances for a photo op outside the National Cathedral dubbed “Swords into Plowshares.”

Co-sponsored by the Children’s Defense Fund — a far-left group even by liberal standards — the event will feature blacksmiths turning “police-confiscated guns into garden tools in a modern-day interpretation of the biblical passage about beating swords into plowshares,” according to a new release.

Very misty-eyed. Very Book of Isaiah and everything. Also very illegal.

As Miller reports, possession of unregistered guns in the District is illegal. Aspokesman for Lanier’s office didn’t change that when he told Miller, “These are not firearms. They are scrap parts only, and they are inoperable.”

The law that should apply to all, local Fraternal Order of Police Chairman Kris Baumann told Miller.

“We are supposed to be the police and, as such, the laws must be applied to everyone without bias,” he said. “The minute we become politicized in how we enforce the law, we become compromised and we lose public trust. This is not rocket science, and yet there appears to be no learning curve on this issue.”

That’s putting it politely. As Miller documents, Lanier has selectively enforced the law by ignoring NBC’s David Gregory’s use of an illegal 30-round magazine as a prop during an interview with the National Rifle Association’s Wayne LaPierre and actually helped anti-gun Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., arrange a display of confiscated “assault weapons” as a publicity stunt for gun control legislation.

In a news release about the event, the NRA demanded the D.C. police put an end to the hypocrisy.

“If [the Metropolitan Police Department] is to carve out exceptions to D.C.’s draconian gun control laws to avoid absurd and unjust consequences, hopefully it will do so on an equal opportunity basis,” the release states.  “Better yet, hopefully the D.C. Council, or the U.S. Congress, will finally embrace the Second Amendment and reform D.C.’s unreasonable firearm laws.

Democrats on the D.C. Council aren’t going to embrace the Second Amendment. But they could at least embrace the law.
