Hundreds of gun rights supporters turned out at a rally on Alamo Plaza on Saturday afternoon – many bringing their rifles and shotguns with them.
“A rifle on our back is part of our everyday life, just like a cellphone is part of our everyday life,” Angela Pena, manager of her husband’s dental practice in South Texas, told the New York Times.
The “Come and Take it San Antonio!” rally was organized after police placed three men carrying rifles outside a Starbucks under noncustodial arrest in August. Texas law allows its citizens to openly carry any type of long guns as long as they’re unloaded, but requires a permit for carrying a concealed handgun. Gun rights advocates would like to see that changed.
“Well the immediate issue is open carry of handguns in Texas like 45 other states allow,” gun rights supporter Robert Gustafason told San Antonio TV station KSAT. “It’s ridiculous to stand with California in not allowing it. But the bigger issue is the pushback to preserve individual liberty.”
