According to a new poll out, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is upside down in his approval rating, but don’t tell that to those gathered at this year’s Values Voter Summit.

On Saturday, attendees voted decidedly in his favor in a presidential straw poll.

Receiving 42 percent of the vote, Cruz easily outpaced neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson and former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, who tied for second with 13 percent each.

U.S. Sens. Rand Paul, R-KY., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., followed with 6 percent and 5 percent, respectively.

“I just spoke with Senator Cruz and he wanted me to convey to you his deep appreciation for your enthusiastic and … that he was very grateful to know that there are Americans across the country who are standing with him as he stands for your values here in Washington, D.C.,” said Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council,  which hosted the three-day event, according to The Washington Times.

Cruz, a first-term senator and Tea Party favorite, has emerged as one of the Republican Party and conservative movement’s most dynamic leaders, Fox News reported.

But the polling numbers that drive the political class show a different story.

A Gallup poll released Thursday shows Cruz’s name recognition has jumped 20 percentage points since June, but his unfavorability numbers jumped 18 points — to 36 percent — in the same time frame, according to Politico.

In his speech Friday at the summit, as reported by Fox News, Cruz said the health care law and Obama’s spending priorities had put the nation on the wrong track.

“We have a couple of years to turn this country around, or we go off the cliff into oblivion,” he told attendees.
