Bloomberg targets tanning salons

Gun control just doesn’t give New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg enough satisfaction these days. Up next on the agenda: skin control.

“The city is launching a new offensive to monitor tanning salons and warn customers of the dangers of skin cancer from overexposure to UV radiation,” the New York Post reported Friday. “In what could be the Bloomberg Administration’s final health crusade, the anti-tanorexic plan will be submitted to the Board of Health on Tuesday. The board — all appointees of Mayor Bloomberg — is expected to adopt the new rules, which would take effect in the spring following public hearings.”

Tanning bed dangers are not news, so why is this initiative needed, especially with more serious challenges faced each day by New Yorkers and Americans alike?

The initiative would require health inspections of tanning salons, machines and their timers, and would crack down on unlicensed tanning. Teens under the age of 17 would also be banned from tanning beds, and tanning bed operators would have to undergo more stringent training, according to the Post, which reported that a new public education campaign is under way to warn about the dangers of UV radiation.

“The war against dangerous tanning skin cancer is a fitting ending to Bloomberg’s 12-year tenure as an aggressive enforcer of public health,” the Post reported.

Fitting or not, the end of Bloomberg’s reign can’t come soon enough for conservatives.
