Union-sponsored immigration rally approved on ‘closed’ National Mall

It’s good to have friends in high places. Although the National Park Service has closed the National Mall to the public during the government shutdown, an immigration reform rally scheduled for Tuesday and sponsored in part by the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union will go ahead Tuesday as planned.

Washington Examiner commentary writer Charlie Spiering tweeted Monday about some strange goings-on at the National Mall:

Yep, this is the same, open-air National Mall that is now barricaded to the public, even though it remained open during previous federal shutdowns.

This is the same National Mall that contains open-air exhibits like the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial — all closed to the public.

The Washington Examiner reported:

rganizers for the “Camino Americano:March for Immigration Reform” were spotted Monday setting up a stage and equipment on the National Mall for the rally which will take place on Tuesday.

A few scattered barriers around the park have signs informing visitors that the area is closed as a result of the government shutdown.

The event is hosted by several immigration activist groups, together with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the AFL-CIO.

The group is seeking comprehensive immigration reform to provide a pathway to citizenship for the nation’s estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants who illegally crossed our borders. The Senate passed its version of the bill in June, but the House has yet to act on it.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, previously indicated he wants a step-by-step approach to immigration reform rather than a comprehensive “Obamacare-like” bill, according to The Hill.

Several events have been planned by conservative groups this weekend in Washington, D.C., and one can’t help but wonder if they’ll be accorded the same courtesy as the immigration reform group.

Truckers to Shut Down America planned a three-day event for Oct. 11-13, to protest “the corruption that is destroying America!” according to its Facebook page.

The Million Vet March on the Memorials scheduled its event for Sunday, Oct. 13, citing its outrage that the Obama administration closed the National Mall’s war memorials.

If the veterans need a hand come Sunday, I’m sure the truckers would be able to come up with a solution. A couple dozen National Park Service rangers would be no match for 10,000 Macks and Peterbilts.
