GOP senator fails in attempt to ridicule Ted Cruz on Senate floor

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., took to the Senate floor on Thursday to not only go after a fellow Republican, but to seemingly take issue with the possibility that the American people might actually be paying attention to their actions.

In targeting U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, fresh off his 21 hour plus floor speech, Corker attempted to ridicule the junior senator for voting for initial cloture on a bill he spent 21 hours filibustering.

“The reason you’re waiting is that y’all have sent out releases, e-mails, and you want everybody to be able to watch, and it just doesn’t seem to me that that’s in our nation’s interest, nor is it, candidly, in the interest of those that want to see good policy on the conservative side come out of this CR,” Corker said before asking Cruz to respond.

As seen in the video, Cruz took fire from both sides of the aisle, as Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid said he would not tolerate “another performance” after Cruz asked to bring U.S. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah into the discussion.

That was a theme that had a bipartisan flavor as Corker referred to Cruz’s filibuster as a “show,” claiming it was “taking priority over getting legislation back to the House so they can take action.”

Displaying his normal calm demeanor, Cruz patiently explained that what he was objecting to was the cloture vote to shut down debate, which would then allow Reid to put in an amendment to fund Obamacare, which the Democratic majority would then vote for.

In making repeated references to “good policy” emerging, Corker did his best to obfuscate and confuse on the issue, just as Cruz warned would happen — Corker was showing public support for the bill to defund Obamacare, knowing full well that Majority Leader Reid will eventually gut that language.

“And part of what’s so problematic with Washington is how many Republicans want a show vote to pretend to their constituents they’re fighting for what they say they’re fighting for, rather than actually fighting for it and actually winning,” Cruz said Wednesday during an appearance on the Rush Limbaugh show.
