Americans on Twitter were outraged Monday morning after a Russian official tweeted out mocking comments about the U.S. and the tragedy unfolding at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC.
Alexey Pushkov, who is reportedly “a member of the Russian parliamentary foreign affairs committee,” according to the Washington Times, tweeted several comments, some in Russian that the Times translated:
“Exceptional” Americans! Some of you have just proved that you are really exceptional – first of all, by your level of hatred and animosity.
— Алексей Пушков (@Alexey_Pushkov) September 16, 2013
The USA should part with the notion of American exceptionalism. It contradicts the principles of equal rights and smells of political racism

“A new shootout at Navy headquarters in Washington — a lone gunman and 7 corpses. Nobody’s even surprised anymore.”
“A clear confirmation of American exceptionalism.”
Americans on Twitter did not respond kindly to Pushkov’s tweet, replying:
Pushkov’s remarks about “American exceptionalism” was a direct reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s criticism of it in his recent New York Times op-ed.
