Mom fights back: Teacher tells daughter she can’t choose God as her idol

A little 10-year-old girl Memphis was hurt when her teacher wouldn’t allow her to write about God for a class assignment. Her mother was furious, and took her complaint to the school authorities.

When Erin Shead returned from school Wednesday, she told her mother, Erica, that her teacher told the class to write about an idol of choice — Erin chose God, according to Memphis CBS affiliate WREG.

godinschool1“It was so cute and innocent. She talked about how God created the earth and how she’s doing the best she can,” said Shead.

However, when Erin turned in her work, her teacher at Lucy Elementary School, her teacher told her she couldn’t use God as an idol, so she had to choose someone else. She chose Michael Jackson.

It was OK to call Michael Jackson an idol, but not God.

In addition, she wasn’t even allowed to leave the paper about God at school. She had to take it home with her.

“How can you tell this baby, that’s a Christian, what she can say and what she can’t say?” asked Shead.

She took her complaint to the school principal.

“I told the principal this morning, would it be better if she wrote about Ellen Degeneres? Of course there was no comment,” she noted.
