Georgia Tech kid’s utterly epic welcome to freshmen goes viral

Nick SelbyWhat a different world it would be if we could channel the passion and enthusiasm of Georgia Tech sophomore Nick Selby whose seriously epic welcome speech to incoming freshmen has gone viral.

Crushing any stereotype that mechanical engineering majors are geeks, Selby donned a cap and gown and blew the freshmen class away last week with his awesome, inspiring speech set to the chilling music from “2001: A Space Odyssey.

A sample from Selby, who really, really, really makes you want to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology:

We chose Georgia Tech because we want to do the impossible.

If you want to change the world, you’re at Georgia Tech! You can do that! If you want to build the Iron Man suit, you’re at Georgia Tech! You can do that!

And if you want to play theme music during your convocation speech like a bad ass, we’re at Georgia Tech, we can do that! I am doing that!

Once the speech went viral, Selby did have to respond to allegations he plagiarized the speech from his former high school debate teacher Andy Stone.

Selby explained to multiple media outlets and on his Facebook page that he was inspired by a similar speech once given by Stone, but that he asked and was “absolutely thrilled” when Stone gave him permission to “use the end of his award-winning speech as the foundation for my own.”
