U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais and a crowd of Tennessee tea party members are being absolutely vilified in the press after the congressman gave an honest answer to an immigration question asked by a little girl.

During a town hall meeting last Thursday, 11-year old Josie Molina asked DesJarlais how to keep her undocumented father from being deported.

“I have a dad and he is undocumented and what can I do so he can stay with me?” Molina asked the congressman, saying that she is here legally.

“Thank you for being here and thank you for coming forward and speaking. This is a big intimidating crowd and appreciate you coming forward and asking your question. But the answer still kinda remains the same. That we have laws, and we need to follow those laws and ya know, that’s where we’re at,” DesJarlais answered to cheers and applause from the assembled crowd.

That answer, and the cheering response, led to the media crucifying the congressman, the tea party and the Republican Party.

Headlines like:

“Tennessee Republican tells girl her father has to be deported as tea party crowd cheers,” from Raw Story.

“Tea Party Crowd Cheers as GOP Rep. Tells 11 Year Old Her Father Will Be Deported,” from Mediaite.

“Crowd Cheers as Scott DesJarlais Tells 11-Year-Old Girl Her Dad Must Be Deported,” from Nashville Scene.

According to the National Day Laborer Organizing Network who posted the video, Josie’s father is currently “in deportation proceedings [and] she’s been going to therapy to deal with the anxiety.”

So, I suppose the liberal answer would have been to teach young Josie there are no consequences for breaking laws, or to lie to her and tell her that her dad can stay here undocumented.

But when conservatives speak the truth and try to teach a young girl that we obey laws, we encourage people to go through the immigration process and be here legally, we are vilified.

Typical, but quite sad.
