If President Obama doesn’t care much about the law, why should they?

Foreseeing the congressional failure of their cherished “immigration-reform” efforts to give citizenship to 11 million illegal aliens,  activists are now banking on their man in the White House to give them what they want even without Congress going along.

And while they’ve been quiet about it, according to a report in the National Journal, they’re at least candid.

“There are groups that are for immigration reform no matter what. Then there are groups like us, grassroots,”  Adelina Nicholls, executive director of the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, told the liberal weekly. “We have the other track. The other track is Barack Obama.”

The other track is also Barack Obama’s liberal use of executive orders, like the one last June that stopped deportation of illegal aliens brought to the United States by their parents – endearingly known as “Dreamers” in the mainstream media.

According to the National Journal, activists hope that very likely illegal order can be the camel’s nose under the tent for a whole host of “low priority” deportation candidates, like “parents of children who are citizens because they were born here, people who are employed, people who are caregivers, and so on.”

So, parents of children who are citizens because they were born here get rewarded because they did what they came here illegally to do – have their children born U.S. citizens. People who are employed get rewarded because they did what they came here illegally to do: get a job they couldn’t find in their own rathole of a country. People who are caregivers get rewarded because … they’re, uh, caregivers.

“And so on.”

He did it for the Dreamers, the reasoning goes, he can do it for the rest.

Or, as the conservative Washington Examiner sums it up: “Amnesty advocates believe that if Obama has the legal authority to grant amnesty to these immigrants, then he also has the legal authority to grant amnesty to all illegal immigrants.” (emphasis added)

Given his history of executive orders on immigration, gun control, business regulations and Obamacare, there’s little doubt Obama thinks he has the legal authority to do pretty much anything he wants. So the activists can be forgiven for thinking so, too.

Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz can duke it out. Charles Schumer can crow about a new “civil rights movement” being built around immigration reform. John Boehner can think about breaking the Senate’s immigration monstrosity into digestible hunks for the House. But hard-core immigration activists know all of that could be irrelevant because “the other track is Barack Obama.”

And if the president doesn’t care about the law, why should they?
