A Houston man is so fed up with the crime that has ravaged his neighborhood that he is offering free shotguns to every resident.
Kyle Coplen formed a group called Armed Citizen Project after a World War II veteran had his house broken into, and takes donations to assist in providing neighbors with free pump shotguns. The group participates in a gun buyback program, as well.
“We give brand new pump action shotguns, 12 gauge or 20 gauge,” Coplen told the local Fox affiliate KRIV. “The area we’re doing has about 400 homes in it. There was 107 home invasions last year,” he explained.
To qualify for a firearm, residents have to pass a background check and a firearms training course that covers legal, safety and tactical training.
Coplen has also given free guns to ten Houston single moms, according to KRIV, and he plans to hand out shotguns to 500 women nationwide next month.
Signs that read “Warning, Armed Citizen: Nothing in my house is worth losing your life” are put up it in neighborhoods where guns have been given, according to the report.
