Sudden release of businesswoman sentenced for reporting own rape in Dubai

Marte-Deborah-Dalelv

The Norwegian businesswoman who was sentenced to a 16-month prison sentence by a Dubai court for engaging in extramarital sex after reporting her own rape has been pardoned.

The Dubai public prosecutor returned to Marte Deborah Dalelv, 42 (reported as 24 by the BBC), her passport on Sunday and was free to leave the country, according to GlobalPost.

Espen Barth Eide, the Norwegian Foreign Minister, broke the story of her release on his Twitter account with the following two tweets:

Dalelv asserted she was raped in March by a colleague, but when she reported the incident to authorities, she was charged with engaging in illicit sex, consuming alcohol and perjury. Her rapist received a 13-month sentence.

A rape conviction requires either a conviction or the eyewitness testimony of four adult males. In this case, her attacker didn’t confess and there were no witnesses.

The following CBS News video was recorded Friday.
