San Diego Mayor won’t resign despite lurid sexual allegations

Bob FilnerIn the midst of facing serious and disturbing allegations of sexual harassment from three separate women, former U.S. Congressman, now-San Diego Mayor, Bob Filner, said Monday he is innocent until proven guilty and will not resign.

The liberal Democrat Filner, 70, claimed he is a defender of women’s rights, but admitted in a bizarre interview with KUSI News on Monday that he likes to hug people, and perhaps needs a “greater self awareness” about his behavior.

“I’m a very demonstrative person. I’m a hugger of both men and women,” Filner said.

The behavior these anonymous women alleged Filner of went further than hugging, though. It “included lewd comments, forcing kisses on women, and groping their breasts and buttocks,” Fox 5 San Diego reported.

Former councilwoman Donna Frye was enraged as she recounted to reporters Monday the graphic, lecherous experiences the women said they had with Filner.

“The mayor had his hand on the inside of her bra and was again trying to put his tongue down her throat,” Frye read based on a statement from one of the women.

“Sexual abuse and this behavior is not normal,” Frye told reporters. “Bob Filner is tragically unsafe for any woman to approach.”

Attorney Marco Gonzalez is representing one of the women who he said is a city employee, and also spoke to reporters Monday.

“There is no circumstance that it would be appropriate for the mayor to enter into an elevator with my client or any person who he employs and to tell them that they would do a better job on that floor if they worked without their panties on,” Gonzalez said.

And while public outcry is growing for Filner to resign, he adamantly is refusing to do so, insisting he wants his day in court to prove the allegations false.

According to a statement issued from the mayor’s office

“I’m not going to resign, and here’s why,” said Filner. “As your elected mayor, I fully expect to be accountable to the citizens of San Diego for all of my actions. But as a citizen of this country, I also expect – and am entitled to – due process, and the opportunity to respond in a fair and impartial venue to specific allegations. I do not believe I am guilty of sexual harassment, and I believe a full presentation of the facts will vindicate me,” said Filner.
