Why is it that on the rare occasion when the Obama administration looks to cut spending, it always turns to the U.S. military?

It is being reported that the Pentagon is looking to possibly eliminate danger pay for service members in as many as 18 countries and five waterways around the world.

Senior defense and military leaders are expected to meet soon to review the matter and are poised to approve a new plan, saving about $120 million each year while taking a bite out of service member’s meager salaries, according to Fox News.

Military leaders came up with a proposed list of locations that no longer were perilous enough to warrant danger pay, the report states, including several countries in the heart of the tumultuous Middle East, such as Jordan.

President Obama recently positioned at least 700 U.S. troops in Jordan due to security concerns as the country shares a border with Syria, which is engulfed in a bloody sectarian civil war.

Under the plan, up to 56,000 troops would be stripped of the stipend, which can be up to $225 per month. Those affected include thousands in Kuwait, as well as thousands of sailors who routinely travel through the Persian Gulf region on ships or airmen who fly over the Gulf, Fox News added.

As for the proposed savings of $120 million, that is but a drop in the bucket for a government that spends $3.5 trillion dollars a year.

In fact, as noted by the Independent Journal Review’s Kyle Becker, the total is the exact amount of the IRS’ $50 million spent on conferences and elaborate videos and another $70 million dollars spent on bonuses.

There is something inherently wrong about a government that always seems willing to undermine the men and women who sacrifice all to keep it safe.
