With public opinion on late-term abortions turning more conservative and as state legislatures reflect this new trend by enacting laws restricting the procedure, pro-choice Democrats, who once expressed the will of the people, now find themselves to be the odd man out.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. and Patty Murray, D-Wa., appeared at a press conference Wednesday to announce their opposition to a recently-passed House bill that would severely restrict abortions after 20 weeks, according to Breitbart News.
Also opposed is House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who said, “As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this,” and “This shouldn’t have anything to do with politics.”
Apart from the fact that this mindset flies in the face of staunchly pro-life Catholic doctrine, it runs contrary to public opinion.
The liberal Huffington Post published the results of a HuffPost / YouGov poll Thursday indicating that by a factor of almost two to one, Americans favor a 20-week restriction on abortions. The actual numbers were 59 percent in favor of the restriction to 30 percent opposed.
As compared to the proposed 20-week ban, most European countries are even more restrictive by almost half. The vast majority restrict the procedure to the first trimester of pregnancy, at either 12 weeks or 90 days, according to The Weekly Standard.
Late-term abortion proponents also have difficulty explaining why such a procedure should be necessary or even allowed.
Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards held a press conference Thursday, along with Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn. in front of the capitol.
Richards, who should be the country’s foremost expert on abortions, couldn’t explain the difference between murdering a child born as the result of a botched abortion as in the recent Dr. Kermit Gosnell case, as opposed to aborting the same late-term fetus in the womb.
When the question was posed by a reporter from The Weekly Standard at the press conference, Richards replied:
I mean he was a criminal. And he’s now going to jail. As I think you heard Senator Franken say and many women who have written about their own personal stories, it is very rare for a woman to need to terminate a pregnancy after 20 weeks. And quite often it’s stories like one we heard today where there is the decision of the doctor that this is the best way, the best for a woman. And the problem is when you have politicians begin to play doctor and make decisions about women’s medical care. They aren’t in that woman’s situation.
After her non-answer, Richards strode off.
Democrats have lately expressed concern that if House Republicans don’t approve the Senate “Gang of Eight” comprehensive immigration reform bill, the GOP is in danger of extinction. The same may be said of the pro-choice Democrats if they don’t change their views on late-term abortions — they’re so “last century.”
