Miami Police: Riot training ‘purely coincidental’ to Zimmerman verdict

It’s no secret law enforcement agencies in Florida, and likely throughout the U.S., are prepared for possible riots after the George Zimmerman verdict, which could come as soon as Friday.

So, it was very odd that Miami Police Department said its riot training Thursday afternoon was “purely coincidental.”

CBS 4 Miami reported officers were training with horses and batons and running “various formations preparing for the worst.”

But Miami Police spokesman Freddie Cruz said no, no, the upcoming Zimmerman verdict has nothing to do with it. Officers are simply undergoing the “mandatory training” they have every year.

“All these officers are given this equipment and it’s in the event we have civil unrest at any given moment our officers are ready on a minute’s notice,” Cruz said. “This is just purely coincidence and it is mandatory training we have to do every year.”

Sure, it is.

“It’s very coincidental that it’s falling at this time,” Fraternal Order of Police union president Javier Ortiz said.

Very coincidental, indeed, considering police haven’t had riot training since 2011, Ortiz told CBS 4.

In any case, at least Miami, like the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, is prepared for whatever happens in the aftermath of the upcoming verdict.
