IRS hearings resumed Thursday, and this time it was the House Ways and Means Committee grilling acting IRS chief Daniel Werfel. The questioning became heated when Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill pounded Werfel over documents that were heavily redacted.
Roskam accused Werfel of illegally withholding information from the committee. Werfel explained the agency was trying to adhere to privacy policies, and noted that full information was sent to the committee chair.
“I want to make sure you understand and that your constituents understand the tension that exists, that we also have a solemn responsibility to protect the confidentiality of their tax-payer information,” Werfel said.
Unable to contain his frustration, Roskam interrupted Werfel and dramatically crumpled the report.
“This is junk! This has no meaning,” Roskam said. “I’m putting you on notice.”
