Although 2016 still seems far off in the distance, contenders are already lining up and testing the waters for a presidential run. The latest to appear to enter the fray is former U. S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton.
Bolton, who briefly considered a run in 2012, has not announced his intentions for the next race. But National Review Online is reporting that he has trips planned to early-primary states Iowa and New Hampshire.[poll id=”66″]
NRO’s Robert Costa reports:
Later this year and throughout 2014, the former Reagan and Bush official will begin an informal national tour. He’ll give speeches, huddle with GOP leaders, and push back against the party’s libertarian shift. He’ll make the case for a muscular foreign policy.
While the most vocal would-be candidate is Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, Costa says that many of the GOP hawks are concerned about his positions on foreign policy. Paul espouses the Libertarian views of a smaller military budget and less intervention in foreign conflicts.
Concerned that he could actually win the nomination, Reason.com’s Mike Riggs says that the “neocons are quietly freaking out” over Paul’s popularity.
“The GOP has all these hot young superstars–Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Paul–plus some more seasoned folks–Scott Walker, Paul Ryan, Kelly Ayotte, Chris Christie–and the neocons push Bolton?” Riggs writes.
Look for Bolton to push back against the Libertarian shift and bolster his national profile by launching efforts that will focus on a strong foreign policy. Whether it launches a presidential campaign remains to be seen, but either way, Bolton could be a player.
