Remember Nancy Pelosi’s “we have to pass it so you can find out what’s in it”?
Harry Reid does.
According to Breitbart News, the Senate majority leader teamed up with fellow Nevada representative, Republican U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, to insert permanent funding into the enforcement section of the immigration reform bill for a tourist-promotion program beloved by their state’s casino interests.
The original Travel Promotion Act would have funded the program through 2015. The provision Reid and Heller inserted, according to Breitbart, would fund the act in perpetuity. And once it was in, Heller was on board with immigration reform.
One of the main connections between tourism and illegal immigration is tourism-related businesses that hire undocumented immigrants. And one of the main reasons for the immigration reform bill – especially its enforcement section – is to stop any business from hiring illegals.
So why insert such a line? Mainly as a prize for Reid’s casino industry backers, who turned the Las Vegas Strip into a Harry Reid outdoor rally when the act was passed in 2009.
“The Las Vegas Casino industry and the Las Vegas Strip officially thanked Reid for passing it,” the Breitbart report said. “Among others, Bally’s Casino ran an advertisement on their electronic billboard on the Strip thanking Reid for its passage, a billboard Reid promoted on his website.”
The Travel Promotion Act chicanery is another example of what happens when 1,000-plus-page bills get stuffed through the House and Senate sausage factory – and leaders like Reid are in charge of the production line.
Other examples, according to Heritage Action, include a provision inserted by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Me., to maker sure immigration-enforcement money can go to the Northeast instead of being restricted to the Southwest, and, according to the Washington Examiner, a provision for special treatment for Alaska seafood plants.
Pelosi’s “we have to pass it so you can find out what’s in it” delivered the looming Obamacare monster everyone’s dreading.
