Former Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday said the Obama administration has squandered its credibility too far – on its conflicting stories about the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, on the IRS scandal – to effectively defend the National Security Agency’s anti-terrorism activities.
But Cheney said the program that was begun when he was in office under President George W. Bush is worthwhile – and he praised the men and women in charge of it.
“I trust these guys implicitly with my life. And what I make of what they’re saying is they are to be believed,” Cheney said in a “Fox News Sunday” interview with Chris Wallace.
“They’re good, honest Americans. They’re patriotic. But they also care very much about their responsibility to safeguard civil liberties.”
The big problem, he said, is the country’s president is not in a position to speak up for the program.
“In terms of credibility, I don’t think he has credibility,” Cheney said. “And one of the biggest problems we have is we’ve got an important point where the president of the United States ought to be able to stand up and say, ‘This is a righteous program, it’s a good program, it saved American lives, and I support it.’
“The problem is the guy has failed to be forthright and honest and credible on things like Benghazi and the IRS. So, he’s got no credibility.”
