Mike Hill, founder and president of the Northwest Florida Tea Party, won the Fla. House Dist. 2 seat on Tuesday. He will serve as the only African-American Republican legislator.
A special election was required after the passing of State Representative Clay Ford, who served the district from 2007 through 2013.
Hill is a veteran of the United States Air Force, has owned a small business for over 20 years and is a devoted husband and father.
House Speaker Will Weatherford and Speaker Designate Steve Crisafulli congratulated Hill on winning the open House seat in a statement released Tuesday night.
“I congratulate Mike for his victory in tonight’s special election,” Weatherford said. “Representative Hill will be a strong voice for limited government and individual liberty, and I welcome him to the Florida House. I know he will ably carry on the legacy of our dear friend Clay Ford.”
“I also want to congratulate Representative Hill for his solid win tonight,” Crisafulli said. “His election sends a clear message that Floridians want smaller government, lower taxes, and the freedom to pursue the American Dream. Representative Hill will be a strong conservative voice in our caucus, and I am excited to welcome him to the House Republican team.”
Republican Party of Florida Chairman Lenny Curry also weighed in on the win.
“The Republican Party of Florida congratulates Representative Mike Hill for his decisive victory this evening,” Curry said. “Representative Hill worked tirelessly to promote his message of less government, lower taxes, and more freedom to the voters of House District 2, and he will be an outstanding member of the Florida House.”
Unofficial results gave Hill the win with 11,060 votes, or 57.88 percent, according to the Florida Division of Elections. Hill’s opponent, Democrat Jeremy Lau received 8,047 votes, or 42.13 percent.
The district covers portions of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties – namely Pensacola, Pensacola Beach and Gulf Breeze. Registered Republicans make up approximately 45% of the registered voters with Democrats accounting for 35%, according to the RPOF.
