Gun sign that has everyone talking in one Arkansas deli

Firearms welcome signThe owner of two small Arkansas sandwich shops has put out a welcome sign for those who are licensed to carry a gun, and they appreciate it. For those who don’t carry, they’re not so sure.

“This is simply an accommodation for people that are legally licensed to carry,” Jim Magers, owner of Schlotzsky’s Deli told KATV 7 in Little Rock.

He says he put up the sign up for reasons that are “far from political,” instead it sends a professional message to legal gun owners about safety.

“They don’t have to think about leaving their guns in the car where it’s less secure and it might become a risk to the public,” Magers said.

But according to KATV, people on both sides of the issue are fired up regardless of the reasoning behind it.

“I don’t think they should have firearms in their eatery like that,” passerby Ray Williams said.

“I think it’s great!” Don Hill, owner of Don’s Weaponry in North Little Rock said. “I think it’s wonderful. I wish every store had a sign like that. I went to buy a car the other day it said no firearms allowed. I turned around and went to the business across the street.”

Magers said peoples’ reactions aren’t the issue, it’s about accommodating his valued customers.

“You either allow it or you don’t and if you don’t they’re forced pretty much to leave it in their car or not come to your business,” Magers said.

Magers said he chose a sign that he didn’t feel had political message, and he is polling customers at each of his restaurants to see how they are reacting.
