Cover-ups multiply sleeze factor in State Dept. sex scandals

The sex-and-cover-up scandal rocking the State Department includes a hushed-up investigation that the U.S. ambassador to Belgium and top Obama fundraiser patronized child prostitutes.

According to the New York Post, allegations made by State Department whistleblower Aurelia Fedenisn include the charge that Ambassador to Belgium Howard Gutman was suspected by the Bureau of Diplomatic Security of patronizing prostitutes and soliciting children for sexual favors and that the department kept it quiet.

The allegations were contained in a memo written by a chief inspector for the State Department’s Inspector General that was first reported by CBS News. The CBS News report did identify the ambassador or the country he served in.

According to Post, the memo said Gutman would lose his security detail to engage in his undiplomatic activities, but the “ambassador’s protective detail and the embassy’s surveillance detection team . . . were well aware of the behavior.”

According to the memo, Undersecretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy called off an investigation by the bureau, the Post reported.

According to the Post, Gutman denied the allegations in a statement.

“I am angered and saddened by the baseless allegations that have appeared in the press and to watch the four years I have proudly served in Belgium smeared is devastating,” the statement said.

Gutman has made headlines before. In December 2011, he told member of the European Jewish Union that Israel is responsible for a whole new strain of anti-Semitism among Muslims, separate from the anti-Semitism that has existed in Europe for centuries.

Gutman, who is Jewish, told the group Israel is causing the anti-Semitism among Muslims because of its conflict with the Palestinians.

At the time, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called for Obama to fire Gutman for the remarks.

According to the Post, Gutman issued a statement denying the prostitution allegations.

“I am angered and saddened by the baseless allegations that have appeared in the press and to watch the four years I have proudly served in Belgium smeared is devastating,” the statement said.

Other details in the memo:

  • That former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s security guards solicited prostitutes while traveling with her in countries including Russia and Colombia, allegedly in the same hotel Clinton was staying.
  • The incident in Colombia occurred before a separate incident involving President Obama’s Secret Service detail, according to the Post.
  • That Clinton Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills helped kill an investigation of a potential ambassador to Iraq. The potential ambassador, Brett McGurk, withdrew from the running before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee could question him.
  • That a State Department Security guard sexually assaulted local guards while stationed in Beirut, Lebanon.
