Feinstein ‘open’ to hearings on surveillance – but info ‘is all classified’

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. and Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., leaders of the Senate and House Intelligence Committees, defended the most recent revelations of the National Security Agency’s phone and internet surveillance programs, saying that they are “within the law” and have actually prevented terror attacks.

Appearing on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Feinstein responded to demands for greater transparency by offering to hold hearings on the NSA’s surveillance. But at about the 7:00 mark in the video below, she says there is a problem with doing that.

“I’m open to doing a hearing every month if that’s necessary,” Feinstein said. “Now, here’s the rub. The instances when this has disrupted plots, prevented terrorist attacks, is all classified. That’s what’s so hard about this. We can’t actually go in there, and other than the two that have been released, give the public an actual idea of people that have been saved, attacks that have been prevented.”

Rogers agreed with her explanation.

“One of the things that we’re charged with is keeping America safe and keeping our civil liberties and privacies intact,” Rogers said. “I think we’ve done both in this particular case. The problem with this is, if you tell our adversaries and our enemies in the counterterrorism fight, they’re not going to conduct business in the same way ever again.”
